Model D: Downtown Pizza Makers Go Gourmet

Featured this week in Model D:

"Metro Detroiters are familiar with Detroit mainstay pizzerias like Buddy's and Pizza Papalis, and let's be honest: the $5.00 Hot-n-Readys from Little Caesar's are a great friggin' deal. But in the last year, Detroit pizza has taken on a new identity -- one that doesn't emphasize the fast-and-cheap so much as taste and quality. (GQ even noticed, naming us the No. 3 pizza town in the country.) We've seen an upswing of new pizzerias that cater to the pizza lover with a discriminating palate, and die-hard pizza aficionados couldn't be happier..."

Tea is the New Coffee: Goldfish Tea

I just recently discovered Bean and Leaf Cafe in Royal Oak, which I must begrudgingly admit (only because it's Royal Oak and I still remember the days of the Coffee Beanery and Brazil) I love. Their pastry case is barely a grade above Starbucks's but their coffee selections are phenomenal, and they also host photography exhibits so it's got that whole artsy vibe thing working for it. I was in Royal Oak once again last Monday and was tempted to stop in for another Vietnamese coffee (it has evaporated milk in it--perfecto), but something kept my feet moving until I stumbled across Goldfish Tea.

Goldfish Tea is a wonderfully unique cafe brimming over with authentic Chinese furniture and accessories. They sell ONLY premium loose leaf Chinese teas--there are no herbal teas, no blends, no freakin' chamomile. Chinese loose leaf tea. That's it. And that's brilliant.

(I can appreciate a healthy stubborn attitude in business--and for this business's sake, thankfully so can Royal Oakites who love a good exclusive cultural experience.)

I spent some time chatting up the very knowledgable clerk and discovered the owners actually lived in China for awhile, so all of the items inside are all actually from China--including the nearly immovable had-carved wooden couches and fixtures, all made from reclaimed wood in China, as well as the ridiculously cheap glass and stone jewelry on sale (I bought a sweet necklace of a heavy green glass leaf on a leather cord for $8.00)--apparently the owners, while living in China, would send all sorts of cheap jewelry to the States which would then be re-sold in flea markets, and now have this surplus of extra jewelry on sale in the store. There is also a variety of tea accessories (wooden tea boats, porcelain and clay serving sets) available to purchase.

The overall effect is a lovely, warm and welcoming space saturated in Chinese artifacts for you to enjoy your (albeit pricey) premium tea that you simply will NOT be able to find elsewhere (these aren't teas you can buy in a box at the grocery store), with a knowledgable and friendly staff willing to assist you in your selections and complimentary Wi-Fi access so you can relax and get some work done. And if you're hungry, Goldfish Tea sells a variety of delicate cookies and pastries that pair well with tea brought in daily from the Pinwheel Bakery in Ferndale.

I fell in love with this place immediately, as I'm sure you will too. Although walking around Royal Oak usually saddens me as I see so little remaining of the city it was 10 years ago (a quick mental inventory reveals about 10 original businesses that have withstood this last decade of change), it is new additions such as this that make me believe maybe it's not all that bad.

Golfish Tea is located at 117 West 4th Street, and is open daily 9:00AM-10:00PM.

Cold Stone Creamery

Last Friday I was taking a pre-summer stroll through the D, and one leg of my adventures took me to the Cold Stone Creamery inside the Greektown Casino. Now let's cut the to quick: Cold Stone ain't cheap. But riddle me this, readers: where else, pray tell, can you find cake batter ice cream?

Indeed.

I had a taste for a little such sweetness, but decided to forgo the much pricier and calorie-packed "Creations" in favor of just the ice cream. While a spoonful of "Birthday Cake Remix" would surely have been heavenly, a cupful probably would have awakened my dormant lactose intolerance and, well, I still had a long walk home.

I proudly (and patiently--those special "Creations" take awhile to make, and if there's any kind of line you'll be waiting for awhile) waited at the counter for my humble 5-oz. "Like It" (that means small) indulgence. Be careful, the staff at Cold Stone Creameries are consistently persuasive, and they will all try to talk you into upsizing your order for only 30 cents more and twice the ice cream. But I don't want twice the ice cream; I want once the ice cream. It's a lesson in moderation and self-control (the sales pitch worked for the two customers before me, however). And still clocking it at a hefty 340 calories and 19 grams of fat, I think I made the wiser choice.

Yes, Cold Stone ain't cheap, and it ain't healthy neither. What this national chain is most famous for is their Signature Creations, utilizing a variety of different "mix-ins" which are blended into the ice cream on a marble slab with large metal spatulas as you watch and wait. (After the novelty wears off, the goods are still tasty.) The particular Creation I resisted contains cake batter ice cream, rainbow sprinkles, brownies, and fudge--not exactly diet-friendly. With all of their various ice cream flavors and available mixers, there are some 11.5 million taste combinations available at Cold Stone. Alas, for this I am not about to be nearly as adventurous as I am with places like (Proof), as my liver tends to bounce back better than my waistline.

For the slightly more health-conscious, there are "healthy indulgences" such as "Sinless Sans Fat" Ice Creams (no fat, no sugar), non-dairy sorbets and smoothies, and fresh fruit mix-ins. Ultimately these are probably about as healthy as a smoothie from Haagen Dazs, but mmmmm...Haagen Dazs...

(Actually the smoothies are all low in fat--save for the Pineapple Coconut Orange--though high in calories.)

After resisting the temptations of upsizing and handing over four bucks for a scoop of ice cream, I was pleased as plums walking out of the place, much to the amusement of the security guards. Apparently they know better than to get between a girl and her ice cream.

Cold Stone Creamery has a number of locations in the metro Detroit area; check the website for details. All are now operating on summer hours (hours vary by location), which for us Detroiters means that from 11:30AM-12:00 midnight seven days a week we can indulge our sweet teeth at the Greektown Casino location.

Hey, we walk more in the summer, it all balances out.

Great Deals at Friday's

Right now at Friday's, you can order from their entire menu of hearty sandwiches and heaping salads for just $5.00 each. Portions are not reduced for cost, either: you still get the same oversized portion of dressing-soaked greens as ever before (the Shanghai Salad pictured below weighs an approximate 2 pounds without the plate). In addition to this, Friday's also offers killer late-night happy hour specials, with half-off appetizers and $2.00 draft specials (as well as great $2.00 and $3.00 drink specials) from 3:00PM-7:00PM and 10:00PM-close. And despite it being a (gasp) chain restaurant, Friday's has always been a good place for some grub and suds. At times overpriced, this limited-time price slash (made to introduce 9 new sandwiches and salads to the menu, only valid through May 31st) is actually more in keeping with what they should have been charging all along (these same sandwiches and salads typically range $8.00-$11.00).

There are locations all over metro Detroit, though I favor the Dearborn and Troy locations for proximity to work, family and friends.

"Tai Hing" Means "Public Housing"

I feel bad for my ex-boyfriend. For years all he ever wanted to eat was Chinese food. Every time I would ask him what he wanted, I always knew the answer would be (in an extremely insenstive but humorous faux-Chinese dialect) "Chinese foooood?" And inevitably, I would scrunch my nose and roll my eyes. That man only got Chinese food on Christmas when we were avoiding our families. Same goes for the one that followed, who would sometimes come home with Chinese carry-out for himself and a pizza for me.

(I love pizza.)

And now here I am, ordering myself some damn General Tso's and Egg Foo Young. Sweet irony. Honestly, I think I was tainted by all those years my parents dragged me to this one place that used to be on Gratiot and ordered Sweet and Sour Chicken every. single. time. I hate Sweet and Sour Chicken now because of that. (That place did have those electronic/neon landscape wall art signs that look like they're constantly moving, though...that was kinda cool.)

After an aggressive marketing campaign during which time I would regularly step over menus slipped discreetly under my apartment door, I discovered Tai Hing Express, a strictly carry-out and delivery Chinese eatery located at 1114 Holcomb St. at Jefferson (east of Van Dyke). Out of boredom, hunger, and a fast-growing realization that I quite possible eat too much pizza, I decided to go with this new Chinese place.

A perusal of the menu revealed all of the classics: egg rolls, assorted lo and chow meins, almond chicken, sweet & sour everything possible. Make no mistake: this is very much a generic Chinese-American joint, no different than the hundreds of thousands of generic Chinese-American joints that came before it (often located in strip malls or shopping malls). But hey--I'm not looking for anything fancy, just something tasty. Oh, Tai Hing also caters to the sushi trend, offering a variety of standard tuna/salmon/shrimp/avocado rolls and edamame. Cute, but I stuck with a straight pseudo-Chinese slate.

You gotta love a place where you order by number (it's the hallmark of all Asian eateries): I opted for A34, General Tso's Chicken and Shrimp Egg Foo Young. This also came with Chicken Fried Rice and an Egg Roll, all for just $8.45. I also added a pint of Egg Drop Soup for $1.32. The price is right as the quantity is enough for two; too bad it was so hard to choke down.
First of all: bland-a-roni. And mind you, I was going into this with low expectations. But even the General Tso's chicken, which should at least have a thick, brownish-red, slightly sweet and spicy sauce was BLAND. The rice was BLAND. The soup was BLAND. The Egg Foo Young was disgusting, but that's partially my fault for not remembering how wholly unappealing it was when my father used to order it (it's basically an omelet slathered in a BLAND gravy). The shrimp was also rubbery and tasted like it had been in the freezer for a year. The egg roll was an egg roll, and much like most egg rolls is only really edible when drowning in plum sauce.

Overall the entire experience was disappointing. I wasn't really looking for anything special: maybe just a place to occassionally scratch my General Tso's and fried rice itch, a non-pizza place to deliver food directly to me when I just don't feel like walking all the way out to the parking lot. Nothing fancy; just decent cheap food. Like a Chinese Little Caesar's. What I ultimately ended up with was almost inedible, and even after braving the leftovers most of it still ended up in the trash. I'm all for giving the local holes-in-the-wall a chance, and have often been pleased enough with the results. But this, dear foodie friends, was more than I could stomach. If only blandness could be their worst crime: it was simply unappetizing. Even the fortune cookie was stale. I didn't even know those things could get stale.

So, the search continues for a decent Chinese diner in Detroit. This is one thing I do miss about Macomb County: Chinese eateries are in abundance and most are pretty decent. (My favorite remains to this day Wok Inn on Hayes in Clinton Township, across the street from Lakeside Mall. Their General Tso's is the bomb-diggity but don't take my word for it--click on the link and check out the comments left by Whytegurl 18.)

Detroit Synergy Supper Club at El Barzon

Detroit Synergy’s Supper Club celebrates the month of May, typically honored as a Mexican heritage month, at Southwest Detroit’s own El Barzón. On Wednesday, May 20th, beginning at 6:00PM, taste the traditional flavors of Mexico as presented by co-owner and Chef Norberto Garita. While you’re at it, why not also try some traditional Italian flavors as well—El Barzón’s menu reflects Garita’s Mexican heritage just as much as it does the eight years he spent as a sous chef at Southfield’s AAA four-diamond upscale Italian restaurant Il Posto…which is why, on any given day, you might see a Mercedes or Beamer parked outside on this otherwise remote and unglamorous corner of Michigan Ave. and Junction. The word is out: El Barzón is in.

Chef Garita is offering a very wide range of his specialty dishes, both the Mexican and Italian, for Supper Club attendees for the very handsome price of $30.00 (inclusive of tax and gratuity). And in keeping with tradition, there will also be an optional two-glass wine flight available for an additional $10.00.

“I want to do a little something for everyone,” says Garita. “I want to make this as memorable an experience as possible for those who are new to El Barzón.”

Garita has included his very popular Mole Poblana dish as a possible contender, though with the variety of other options available the decision won’t be easy. Bring a friend and share!

• Appetizers will be served family-style and include Fritto Misto (shrimp and calamari), Bis Di Pasta (Strozzapreti Norcina—a dense noodle with a truffle-scented sausage and tomato sauce—and Cavatelli alla Boscaiola, a garlic and mushroom cream sauce), and Chiles Rellenos (homemade tomato sauce filled with ground beef and cheese);
• Entrees include a variety of options:
o Mole Poblano—chicken breast with mole sauce made with chile seco, tomatillo, anix, bread, banana, etc.
o Cecina El Barzón—thin-sliced steak with fresh arugula and tomato or sautéed onions and jalapeño pepper
o Barbacoa de Chivo al Horno—slow-cooked steamed goat barbecue
o Cavatelli alla Boscaiola—dry porcini mushroom and cream sauce
o Lasagna—baked pasta layered with authentic Bolognese meat sauce and mozzarella cheese
o Scaloppine al Barolo e Porcini—veal scaloppini sautéed in porcini mushroom and Barolo wine sauce
o Spaghetti e Scampi El Barzón—fresh tomato, basil, garlic, fresh mozzarella cheese and fresh arugula
o Pollo al Limone—chicken breast with lemon sauce and capers, sautéed with white wine
• For dessert, diners can choose between Mexcian Flan and Tiramisu
• There will also be plenty of fresh tortilla chips served with homemade mole verde and mole rojo (green and red sauces) to start

El Barzón offers a wide range of traditional flavors for a wide range of tastes, as well as authentic dishes that you won’t find at the more popular and trendy eateries of Mexican Town. Still considered to be one of Detroit’s best-kept secrets, El Barzón is becoming increasingly popular on the strength of word of mouth and a handful of rave reviews. Join Supper Club on May 20th to be in on the secret buzz, and discover for yourself what local foodies consider to be one of Detroit’s best restaurants!

Tickets are $30.00 in advance at the DSG store, http://shop.detroitsynergy.org, and include tax and gratuity. There will also be an optional two-glass wine flight available for an additional $10.00. Tickets to this event are available by online purchase only, and all purchases must be made by Tuesday, May 19th. Due to capacity issues, there will be a strict adherence to a 40-person limit. There will be absolutely no walk-ins permitted. Tickets are first-come, first-served.

Check out pictures from the last Supper Club at 24 Grille here! Also, save the date for Wednesday, June 10th, when Supper Club boards the Detroit Princess for a sunset dinner cruise. And if you haven't done so already, join Supper Club's Facebook page here.

Monday, May 11th: Luciano’s Wine Dinner at Luciano’s in Clinton Twp.

Great wine begins in the vineyard! Airfield Winery is the largest producer of wine grapes in Washington state, totaling over 850 acres of vineyards. Some of these vineyards are amongst the best in the state. The vineyard is located at the foot of Rattlesnake Mountains in the Yakima Valley. All of the vineyard blocks are situated within a 3 mile radius of the orifinal WWII airbase. These are World Class wines with the write up and the medals to prove it.

The incredible menu follows:
Airfield Chardonnay served with Calamari and Shrimp Ai Ferri - grilled shrimp topped with an oil/herb vinaigrette.

Airfield Cabernet served with Eggplant and Ricotta - fried eggplant stuffed with our ricotta and topped with a ripe red tomato, basil and garlic sauce.

Airfield Bombshell served with Rigatoni and fresh tomato, basil and garlic sauce - This sauce is lighter then the eggplant sauce and Luciano puts his own special touch on this one.

Airfield Merlot served with Barbeque Short Ribs - Barbeque sauce is Lucianos special recipe with a splash of orange zest served along side pan-fried potatoes and onions.

Airfield Merlot served with Cotelettes - N.Y.steak cut very thin, breaded and pan fried served with ammoghio sauce on the side (which is a fresh tomato, garlic and basil sauce). Served with pan fried potatoes and onions.

Airfield Riesling - Rosa's Homemade Cheesecake and Cannoli

This menu is specially made by Luciano himself freshly made daily, so please know that Luciano is showing off his hard work and great Italian cooking. He takes a lot of pride in serving his customers quality!

Indi Edibles

There's been quite a bit of buzz lately here in Detroit over urban farming, urban gardens, community gardens, locally-grown organic food, sustainable cuisine, and an all-encompassing push towards all things green. These are things you've most likely heard about already; what you perhaps have not heard about are the growing number of advocacy groups and businesses dedicated entirely to the growth, awareness, and promotion of such urban agricultural endeavors. These are people that have chosen local organics as a lifestyle, not just to support local farmers but because it is healthier, it tastes better, and really--all the cool kids are doing it. The call is for a shunning of highly processed food products not meant to be consumed by the human body and a return to nature.

Enter Indi Edibles, a Detroit-based video production business which is focused entirely on promoting urban farming, better health through organic foods, and the advocacy group G.U.R.U. (Growing Urban Renewal Underway). They produce how-to videos for people to learn more about growing their own food, as well as videos documenting the progress of various urban farms and any number of other similarly-minded projects. Their website also boasts a blog, a forum, a store, links to music selected by the IE family (and music by some of the IE family), a variety of useful links to other resources, as well as pictures of the IE family members (I suspect you'll see a lot of familiar faces, or at least recognize names such as Frank Raines, Funk Night DJ). $5.00/month gets you access to all of their videos and keeps you in the loop with all of the continued growth and progress of Detroit's urban farming/greening scene. Their studio is even located inside the Russell Industrial Center, keeping it all homegrown.

James Beard Award Winners 2009

Well, one of our own sort of won. In the sole category that sported a Michigan nominee--"Best Chef, Great Lakes" with Zingerman's Alex Young repping the mitten--the one who took home the award was ultimately Michael Symon for Cleveland's Lola. Which is almost a Michigan win, since Symon recently opened Roast inside the Westin Book-Cadillac which, in light of his increasing fame (first made a nationally-known name amongst foodies and Food Network fans with his Iron Chef win), is bound to get increasing amounts of national attention. Good for him and good for us. Congrats on the win, Mr. Symon, though I think the Rattlesnake's Jimmy Schmidt can still claim the sole Michigan title-holder!

Baile Corcaigh Will Say "Failte!" No More

After over a year of rumors and assumptions, word has it that Corktown's Baile Corcaigh (pronounced bal-ya cor-kee) has officially closed its doors. The space was beautiful with all the old stained glass and solid oak interiors (like a real bonafide Irish pub), and the beer selection was top-notch, offering Irish creme ales and other brews not found anywhere else that dares to proclaim itself "Irish" (the Old Shillelagh could be the poster child for this). However, $11.00 sandwiches and $15.00 fish and chips in a glorified pub coupled with sporadic and inconsistent hours in a remote location with little promotion is not the recipe for a successful business, even in the best economies. It is sad to see this place go, but honestly, it comes as a surprise to no one.
